A mysterious image-generation model called luna-lisa-alpha has appeared in community tests connected to LMArena, leading to speculation that OpenAI may be testing a new GPT Image checkpoint.
The name immediately attracted attention because another anonymous model, mona-lisa-1, appeared on LMArena earlier in August 2026. Community testers believe luna-lisa-alpha may be a newer version or experimental branch of that model.
However, neither OpenAI nor LMArena has officially explained the new codename.
What happened?
On August 20, AI model tester Chetaslua shared images reportedly generated by luna-lisa-alpha. The tester described it as a new GPT Image checkpoint following the earlier “monalisa” model.
According to the post, early outputs showed:
- More realistic image generation
- Stronger text rendering
- Better awareness of recent information
- Improved overall visual quality

Other users soon began posting comparisons between luna-lisa-alpha, GPT Image 2 and Nano Banana Pro. Some preferred the new model’s detail and cinematic appearance, while others thought Nano Banana Pro produced more natural-looking faces. See an early comparison.
These examples are interesting, but they are not controlled benchmarks. The number of public samples remains small, and individual image preferences are highly subjective.
Is it connected to mona-lisa-1?
The connection is plausible, primarily because of the similar names.
mona-lisa-1 appeared in LMArena discussions around August 9. One widely shared report claimed that images generated by the model triggered OpenAI’s content-verification tool, suggesting that the files originated from an OpenAI system. See the mona-lisa-1 report.
OpenAI explains that its verification tool can detect supported C2PA metadata and SynthID watermarks in images created through OpenAI tools. A positive result is a meaningful provenance signal, but it does not reveal the exact model or checkpoint used. Read how OpenAI Verify works.
More importantly, the publicly shared verification result concerned mona-lisa-1, not luna-lisa-alpha. No equivalent independently verified result for the new codename has been published yet.
The similar naming therefore suggests a relationship, but it does not prove that both labels refer to the same model family.
Is luna-lisa-alpha GPT Image 2.5?
There is currently no evidence supporting an official product name such as “GPT Image 2.5” or “GPT Image 3.”

The most useful confirmation would be an OpenAI announcement, a new API model identifier or the appearance of luna-lisa-alpha on LMArena’s public leaderboard.
More repeated tests are also needed to evaluate text accuracy, prompt following, editing consistency and realism. A single attractive generation cannot establish that the model is better than GPT Image 2 or Nano Banana Pro.
For now, the most accurate description is:
luna-lisa-alpha is an anonymous LMArena image candidate that may be a newer checkpoint following mona-lisa-1, but its developer, final product name and release plans remain unconfirmed.
The new codename is a meaningful signal—but not yet an official model launch.
